Day 23: Washed Laundry in Cold Water

Day 23: Washed Laundry in Cold Water

Today was laundry day. Took my unmentionables to the laundromat and washed them in cold water.

According to The US Department of Energy, 90% of the energy used for washing clothes in a conventional top-load washer is for heating the water. There are two ways to reduce the amount of energy used for washing clothes—use less water and use cooler water.

What was your simple green act for the day?

I've been trying to wash my laundry in cold water as well. Apparently most of the energy used to run the washer is from hot water.

Yes and the clothes come out just as clean.
  • I use 7th generation natural laundry detergent which is formulated to work best in cold water. I was skeptical at first but it works great and you really don't need the hot water. I also pack the washer full (but thats partly also because its so expensive to do laundry in NY and I'm cheap!)

I've been using Dr. Bronner's for a while with no problems (at least that I noticed). What in NY isn't expensive?
